The story of Martha and Mary in the home of Martha is a top favorite of mine in the Bible (I have so many favorite Bible stories it’s hard to choose just one) because I can relate to Martha in this story. Martha is trying to be a good servant and is distracted by all the preparations that need to be done that she finds herself worried and upset, and to top it off, her sister Mary is just sitting and listening to Jesus instead of helping her. It does not feel good when you are in situations like this. A lot of times we just need to switch what we are doing and sit with Jesus first like Mary.
Jesus says in Luke 10:42 but few things are needed – or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her (NIV). Mary is sitting with the One person who holds the whole world in His hands – Jesus! It is going to be better!
When we are in situations that we find ourselves distracted, overwhelmed, worried or anxious, or think we are going to be in situations that might turn into these things, we just need to switch what we are doing and sit with Jesus, or sit with Jesus first before heading off to work or daily activities. Martha probably would have felt a whole lot better as a host if she sat with Jesus first. Jesus is able to change our situation!
These are 7 great things I have experienced just from switching and sitting with Jesus first.
1. Peace instead of worry.
2. Work load looks different. Jesus gives us rest.
3. God makes our paths straight instead of being all over the place.
4. You gain wisdom on what is better for you. Jesus said Mary was doing what was better by sitting with Him.
5. Joy
6. Freedom from things like worry, frustration, burdens, etc.
7. Provision – He provides all of this for us and more!
Next time you find yourself feeling like Martha, I encourage you to switch what you are doing and sit with Jesus!
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that You cover a multitude of things when we come and sit with You! I pray that when I find myself feeling like Martha, distracted and worrying about all that needs to get done, I will switch what I am doing and sit with You. In Jesus’ Name I Pray, Amen.
